The SEO white-hat techniques have evolved over the years, but one of the most important elements of the optimization process has remained the link building.

Search engine optimization has an accelerated dynamics and yet few SEO tactics have evolved as much (or as frequently) as the link building.

Over the course of a decade, we have been able to see 10 different link building techniques (maybe even more).

What was once a spamming nightmare and links built into the pyramid system, poor quality content and other fireworks of its kind, now only is tolerated.

Over time, various link building techniques have been used at their time and yielding very good results. Looking back, one can very well see that the situation has changed radically.

Changes in this segment have been considerable over the past 10 years, and link building has become a more refined and quality-oriented process.

Much of this evolution was also driven by changes to search engine rankings - the simplest example would be Google, which played an enormous role in "cleaning up" the web of such spam items through updates of the Penguin algorithm.

Below I will list the 10 major changes in link building techniques that have taken place over the past 10 years.

  1. Penalties are far more drastic
  2. Poor quality links no longer work
  3. Links from the same source are giving worse results
  4. Guest posts have become ideal link building techniques
  5. Content standards are quite different
  6. The publication of press releases in national trusts has diminished
  7. Very rich keyword content has become a serious problem
  8. Techniques to attract links are very effective
  9. The link building process is becoming more and more difficult
  10. Link-building techniques do not only account for the positions they have achieved
